Banners hold late artist's memories of Henry Street

The late Roanoke artist David Ramey drew scenes from the lost heyday of Henry Street, once the core of a thriving black business district in Northeast Roanoke. Thursday, Ramey’s art, larger than life, went on display in the neighborhood where he grew up. The Roanoke Higher Education Center has embarked on a $5 million expansion of the Claude Moore Education Complex, which houses Virginia Western Community College’s Al Pollard Culinary Arts Institute. Fifteen banners reproducing Ramey’s drawings of Henry Street life now hang on the Wells Avenue fence that cordons off the construction site.
